Welcome!

Welcome to your American political culture poliblog experience! Each week you will be required to read the post for that week (which may include a news article, question, comment, multimedia clip, controversial issue, etc.) and respond with your comments. Each of your comments should be no more than 1/2 page (approx. 1 long paragraph or two short paragraphs) and must be posted by 8:00 Wednesday night. You do not need to do any outside research in order to respond, just reflect on the topic of that week, the other comments posted on the blog and make an argument presenting your views. The goal is to create an online dialogue, so try as much as possible to reply to classmates posts or refer to them in order to build a dialogue that we can then bring into class. You must post at least one comment on 8 different weeks (NOTE: you do not need to write a comment every week). But you MUST read the post and all comments either Wednesday night or Thursday before class each week. Enjoy!

  1. I identify as a democrat. My mother also emigrated from Mexico so I resonate more with democratic ideas regarding subjects like immigration.
    2) How has this affected your conception of the role of government or your relationship with the government?
My local government is absolutely terrible and it has severely impacted my relationship and faith with the government. And as the years progress I find myself trusting and believing in the government less. My trust in the government is very low at both the local and federal level.
    3) Who or what has affected your personal views about politics specifically or social or moral issues in general (people, institutions, media, personal experiences, etc...)?
My father played a huge role in building my political identity. He is very involved in many democratic campaigns as well as being involved heavily in the local government. It was my father’s involvement in my local government that exposed how awful my local government was. (my town has a small but pretty efficient political machine). All of the rallies and events I experienced with him helped create my political identity.
    4) Why do you do feel the way you do about various political groups (both similar and different from you)?
In today’s world politics are more personal than they used to be. because of the media, politics have been ingrained into our identities. So much so that an attack on our political party is usually seen as a personal attack. This leads to a large political divide, everyone is usually either an avid democrat or republican leaving very little room for a middle ground.
    5) How does the time and place in which you live impact your political or cultural views?
It really impacted my views. My father being such an avid democrat as well as being in a largely democratic community, democratic ideas were readily available and often reinforced. The time period we live in also reinforced my democratic views. We’ve seen giant progressive strides, but also have seen terrible things that need to be fixed. Social media also tends to energize your political views whatever they may be. Strengthening your resolve and ultimately loyalty to your party.
